Death/Ashes Certificate for Indian National/Foreign-Indian

In addition to uploading documents at SEWA portal, following documents are required during submission at the Embassy.
- Death Certificate to an Indian National
Documents required for issue of Death Certificate to an Indian National (all the documents issued by Norwegian authorities need to be translated in English, notarized and apostilled):
- Passport in original
- Copy of passport, front picture page and address page
- Letter stating request for Death Certificate
- Medical Certificate stating cause of death and deceased’s details(from official government body) in Norsk and English.
- Copy of informant’s passport (spouse, next to kin, etc.)
- District Court statement about foreign citizen’s death in original and details about person’s death in English.
Additional documents required for transporting the dead-body to India (all the documents issued by Norwegian authorities need to be translated in English, notarized and apostilled) :
- Certificate of Embalming of body from Hospital
- Certificate that the body is placed in a zinc-lined coffin.
- Declaration that the coffin contains nothing but the body.
- Certificate that the body is not contaminated with contagious disease.
- Authorization for removal of body from the police.

Documents Required to be uploaded at ecare portal
Embalming Certificate:
(Please make sure that the embalming certificate fulfills below mentioned conditions)
- Is the certificate translated in English (Translated Copies are accepted with the sign and stamp of the authorized translator)?
- Is the chemical used and procedure followed for embalming mentioned on the certificate?
- Does the certificate have a mention of packaging procedure?
Packing and sealing certificate of the urn:
(Please make sure that the embalming certificate fulfills below mentioned conditions)
- Are the ashes contained in the urn with an outer packing of suitable material, from the crematorium?
Death Certificate:
(Please make sure that the death certificate fulfills below mentioned conditions)
- Is the certificate translated in English (Translated Copies are accepted with the sign and stamp of the authorized translator)?
- Is the Clear cause/ Reason of death mentioned by treating physician/hospital?
NOC From Indian Embassy of concern country:
(Please make sure that the NOC fulfills below mentioned conditions)
- There is a mention of the Name, Age/gender, date of death & place and the passport number of the deceased.
- If the passport is missing or not accessible, please provide the reason
Cancelled passport:
Scanned copy of Front and Back side of the cancelled passport
Transporting ashes to India
Documents required
(all the documents issued by Norwegian authorities should be translated in English, notarized and apostilled)
- Passport in original of the deceased,

- Medical Certificate stating cause of death and deceased’s details (from official government body) in Norsk and English.

- Laissez-Passer for Ashes from the Police in English
- Certificate from the Cemetery/Crematorium that the urn contains nothing but ashes of the deceased, and that the urn is hermetically sealed and does not represent any health danger in English and Norwegian

Detailed Repatriation Process Outline
· Repatriation Process for Natural Death (Total lead time is approx. 15-20 working days)
Working Day 1:
- Family or authorities (Funeral homes/Hospital) notify the embassy;
- Parents / Immediate family members are advised to nominate a person on their behalf to carry out all the formalities in Norway, if they are unable to come to the foreign country to take over the mortal remain. In this case an AFFIDAVIT (on stamp paper) may be made in India and scanned copy may be e-mailed immediately to the authorised person. The original copy may be sent by courier in due course;
- Embassy contacts the family to provide emotional support and guidance throughout the repatriation process. Simultaneously, Embassy notifies the deceased family to obtain updated document requirements and informs or connects with the funeral home: (1) Jølstad. Website- https://jolstad.no/

- Family / funeral home may also contact the Norwegian employer for insurance, in case the deceased was employed.
Working Day 2-10:
- Funeral home initiates the repatriation process;
- Funeral home obtains essential documentation from the hospital, which includes the death certificate, medical certificate, Embalming Certificate, Certificate of packaging of Human Remains, and other documents as mentioned in the checklist;
- Once all the above/requisite documents are acquired, they need to translated from Norwegian into English;
- The translated versions of the documents are stamped and signed by local authorities such as the Court house or Police, Notarised (Notary Public) and Apostilled (Fylkesmannen) .
Working day 11 (mostly couple of hours)
- The funeral home submits the completed paperwork and submit to the Embassy for approval;
- The embassy reviews the documentation and the notarised and apostilled translated versions of the documents are stamped and signed by the Embassy. And passport of the deceased is cancelled and a death certificate is also issued;
- On completeness of documents, Embassy issues a death certificate and attests all the relevant papers same day and delivers to the funeral home;
The applicant is further asked to upload the following documents at eCARe portal- https://ecare.mohfw.gov.in/ for conducting dead body/human remains clearance procedures electronically:
- Embalming Certificate
- Death certificate
- NOC from Indian Embassy
- Cancelled copy of Passport
- Certificate of packaging of Human Remains as per WHO guidelines
Working Day 12-20
- The funeral home books a repatriation flight to the deceased's home town (nearest Airport.);
- The remains arrive in the deceased's home country;
- The remains are delivered to the family or authorized representatives;
- It is the responsibility of the family/relative/next of kin to arrange further transportation of mortal remains from the airport to the desired destination.
· Repatriation Process for Unnatural Death (Total lead time is working day 20+)
- The Police Department conducts an investigation into accidental death; and the duration is unknown due to the nature of the incident; legal procedures take time;
- Following the investigation, the police complete the investigation report and issue a death certificate and autopsy report;
- Subsequently, the repatriation process follows the same steps as mentioned above in natural death cases;
